THE BLOCK – Main Street Photography Contest

Regency - Waxy Contest
I’m giving away one free print. Yup. FREE! But in exchange, I need your help, both desperately and quickly.
Memelabs and Parklane Homes are sponsoring a contest to be the next Fred Herzog, an icon of Vancouver Street Photography. Please visit the three links below and vote for my photographs. Unfortunately you will need to register but hopefully with the opportunity to win a print you can overlook that small detail!

Once you’ve voted, make sure to leave a comment here saying so, or email me at contests (at) waxyphotography.com, to tell me you’ve voted. Remember, to win you must say “I Voted.” This is by the honor system, so please, be kind to your neighbors and vote. On Monday June 1, 2009, I will choose one name by random drawing [Memelabs has extended to voting period. To be fair, I have done the same. The winner of the free print will be notified at the close of voting, around June 8, 2009. Thanks!]. That person will receive an 8 x 10″ C-print from my portfolio.
Thanks for your help!
Waxy
P.S. The reason I entered the contest at the midnight hour is that I have been wrestling with the organizers to make fairer rules for photographers (see here). They have done that. Thus, by voting you are supporting an organization that supports photographers rights. Furthermore, they have asked to meet with me following the close of the contest. If you would like to share your constructive ideas on how they can better support photographers rights, I would be pleased to forward them to the organization. Thanks!

I voted! (I like them all. I chose the third one.)
I Voted
Okay, I voted! Good luck, Waxy :)
oh, now I see that you wanted us to vote for all three. I did that.
Voted: good luck dude.
all my votes are belong to you. :-)
I voted! And good for you for working with them to improve photographer rights!
I voted. Good work as usual. Good luck.
i voted. your work is really inspiring…
Good luck to you. I was the twelfth voter for your pics so it looks like you got some votes outside your little side-contest here :-)
Hope you make the top ten, ’cause if you do I think Herzog will pick you.
Thanks everyone! I very much appreciate your votes.
@Kyler: I hope I make the top 10. At this point I have a lot of catching up to do. I get a late start for fighting the good fight. It turns out I get more time. The contest organizers extended the voting deadline until next week. Still, it’s no time to rest. I want to meet Mr. Herzog!
I voted. I’m sure you will get to the top 10.
Maybe, but some of the photos have 100+ votes. Gotta keep this train moving, or else…
voted. good luck!
I went and registered but it said that voting was over. :(
Thanks again, all!
@Chris: The voting was supposed to end at midnight PST last night, but I’m told they are extending the contest by one week. I’ll let you know when they are accepting votes again. Cheers!
Like Chris Norris, I registered and then discovered that voting was over. Hope you still win!
@filmgoerjuan: Thanks! I’ll be in touch soon.
@Chris, @filmgoerjuan:
Voting is open. Please try again.
@everyone
When voting closes, which I believe is on June 7th, I will name the winner of the random draw. Thanks again for your help!
done & good luck
Voted, good luck.
You’ve got my vote. Good luck.
Voted.

I’m told that the contest organizers (Memelabs) have extended the voting period. Thus, I am doing the same to be fair to other people who want a chance for the free print. The winner will be notified on June 8, 2009.
Thanks for understanding and your votes. So far it is 30 and counting…
is the extra week for voting going to be published? or is this apply for you to get into the top 10?@Waxy
published on the memelabs website i mean….
@Slither: For two days (Friday – Sunday) there were about 10 photos sitting in the queue pending approval, including mine. I could not vote during that time frame, nor could those other participants. I contacted Memelabs requesting approval. They got back to me on Sunday, approved the photos, and said they will contact all participants with a letter that states the contest voting date is extended.
As far as me getting in the top 10, well, I hope I do. But honestly, we all have more time — it’s not just me.
For the past 2+ months I have been pushing the organization to make more fair rules for photographers. I did not submit photos for the contest that entire time while others accumulated votes. I did not submit until Memelabs ensured that ALL photographers would maintain their ownership of their photos.

OK, voted. All three are great shots, John, and fit the theme perfectly.
Im a participant aswell, but I aint got no letter from Memelabs
thx for the heads up?
@Slither
Glad to help. I only have a letter because I contacted them, as I said above. Either way, you still time. We all do. The site is still active so get your votes on!
I voted (already mentioned, but I want to make sure that I’m eligible for the print offer). Are we able to vote multiple times or is it just once per account?
Voted, It’s fairly easy to pick your photos out of the crowd!
Good luck to you!
Thanks, TA! I hope Herzog feels the same, if I get there. You and I should quiz each other on the car models above! ;-)
voted x 3
Voted. Good luck..
I voted!
Thanks griff, herewithmyfamilym and poetwee!
I’m almost in the top 10 but I need to keep scraping the friend list. Few days to go…
i voted
Voted. Good luck and good work on pushing them to change the rules.
i think you are the only one getting votes out of this deal, no numbers are changing in the top ten or anywhere else. this is bogus and no mention of voting extension by memelabs
@Slither: I voted for Urbanworm’s photos and saw the number increase. While I can’t attest as to why Memelabs has not announced the rule change (which is allowed by the posted rules), I agree that it is bad form. As far as my vote, I am working very hard to promote my photos. You can do the same!
Thanks Stef and Claydo!
I voted.
Waxy, I voted, you currently need 20 more votes to get into the top ten :(
@Fred: The rules are a bit ambiguous but I believe the top 10 refers to the top 10 vote-getters, and not the top 10 photos. It would be silly to give multiple copies of the runner up prize to the same person. So, if that’s true… I’m OK for now (I hope!). But that’s why I’m keeping up the pressure.
Also, if I get in the top 10, I’m giving a 10% discount on the price of a print, but only for those who voted. So, if you could spread the word I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks Adam and Fred.
Hi Waxy:
I voted.
Vote Number 75 for Regency and Vote number 68 for Friends.
Feel free to vote for me as well.

Cheers
Thanks einstraus!
I voted for you too, #42. Good luck!
I voted. Good luck, John!
I voted :)
Well, voting is now officially closed according to the Memelabs website. A big thank you to everyone who participated in my own mini-contest! With your help it appears that I am among the top 10 vote-getters and hopefully heading to the final round where my photograph will ultimately be judged by Fred Herzog himself. I’ll be back within the next days to announce the winner of the Waxy contest.
Thanks again… and good luck!

Am I the only one who thinks it’s weird for Fred to be associating with a company which is helping demolish the buildings he recorded in his wanderings?
Herzog is a photographer — not an urban planner or architectural preservationist. The people pictured in his art grew old, as did the buildings. I don’t want to sound flippant, but photographers have all kinds of reasons to take pictures. One of those is to keep memories and Herzog already retains that from his pics. Nevertheless, if I get to meet him, maybe I’ll ask how he feels about Vancouver losing its architectural heritage.
What struck me as odd was that Mr. Herzog and the gallery that represents him associated themselves with a contest that were unfair to future photographers. Fortunately, the company came around and changed the rules which is why I chose to enter so close to the 12th hour. I’d like to thank Memelabs again for doing that. I do wonder if Herzog and Equinox Gallery read the fine print though…
Congratulations, Waxy.
I think it states twice that its the top ten most votes photographs:
“The ten most voted for photographs will be framed and displayed at Parklane’s BLOCK party this summer.
2 -The top ten photographs with the most votes from the public will all receive a framed print of their winning photograph”
But i agree, so far their logic hasnt been too sound in other respects. How do they account for the photographs with the same amount of votes in the top ten?
So who knows.
good luck though
Yeah. That would mean some photographers get multiple copies of Herzog’s book, which would be odd. I’m not quite patting myself on the back. This is Memelabs’ first photo contest, if I’m not mistaking. They seem to be working some kinks out about how they operate them. We’ll see. Thanks for the note, Francis. I still feel that some luck needs to come my way…
Thank you for participating, everyone! I very much appreciate the concerted effort. I’m pleased to announce that the winner of the 8×12″ print is…… regina van der kloet from the Netherlands! You may know her as 1-2-3-regina on Flickr. She also has a personal portfolio site at improovies.
I also was a winner and recently took home a signed copy of Fred Herzog’s Vancouver Photographs. Thanks again, everyone, and I hope you enjoy the print, Regina!
